Whats a 8 track tape11/21/2023 ![]() ![]() I certainly didn’t buy it because I wanted it to play 8-track tapes, instead I wanted a talking point for my hi-fi, something quirky to set it apart from everyone else’s. Where I found it has disappeared into the mists of time, but it was probably at a radio rally or junk sale. BSR were much more well-known for their turntables, so this is something of an oddity. Some time in the early 1990s, I acquired an 8-track player, a BSR McDonald unit manufactured in the UK and dating from the early 1970s. Our retrotechtacular series usually highlights a video showing a bygone technology, but today we’re going to get a little more hands-on. Thus if you owned an 8-track player it was most likely to have been found in your car, but it was not uncommon to find them also incorporated into home hi-fi systems. Thus we come to our subject today. Government & Heritage Library, State Library of NC (CC BY 2.0).Ĩ-track cartridges were developed from earlier tape cartridge formats, largely to satisfy the demands of the automotive industry for interchangeable in-car entertainment. A triumph of marketing, really, it should more accurately have been called 4-track stereo. One of several that you might have found in a well-equipped home of that period was the 8-track stereo cartridge, a self-contained tape cassette format that fit four stereo tracks onto a single quarter-inch tape loop as eight parallel tracks, four each of left and right. If you are of a certain age you may even have a cassette deck, though you’re more likely to have abandoned that format some time in the 1990s. If you are old enough to have been around in the 1960s or 1970s though, you may have owned another analogue audio format. If you are a connoisseur of analogue audio, it’s probable you might have a turntable and a stack of records at home somewhere.

Starting the Media Server and Setting up a Media Library Ideally, we’d shame WD into doing a better job of integrating Twonky into the M圜loud, so it’s not such a struggle, and doesn’t require Linux administrator-level skills to make it work properly. This is to distinguish control settings and file system paths. Where I mention control settings, I use a | to indicate a level of hierarchy in the menu system. But I am stubborn, and determined to find out how to make the thing work the way I want it to. I’m not a M圜loud, Twonky or Linux expert (but I’m moderately competent). I’ve spent a long time trying to understand how it works, and reading the forum, I see many other people also have trouble with it. Sadly it doesn’t seem very well integrated into the M圜loud, and the two fight for supremacy. The M圜loud includes a Twonky DLNA Media Server. Whatsapp for computers11/21/2023 QR code on an iPhone used to configure WhatsApp for use on a Windows PCĪ user simply has to visit the WhatsApp web page on a supported browser and then scan the QR code there using the WhatsApp app on their smartphone (usually an iPhone or Android device). Invariably, on computers, WhatsApp web client (for browsers) and the WhatsApp desktop application are the objects of interest for us in this guide.įigure 2. WhatsApp's popularity on smartphones-in terms of users-did not completely translate to computers, but millions of people still use WhatsApp on their PCs and Macs. The media regularly reports cases-such as the London Bridge attack-where an attacker communicated with people through WhatsApp before the attack. WhatsApp's messaging capabilities, its broad coverage of all mobile and desktop OS platforms, and its extensive usage make WhatsApp forensics important-and hence, While users and privacy advocates welcomed the new setup supposed to keep their messages more secure, it spelled trouble for law enforcement agencies who had to find new methods of obtaining suspects' communications history. In the last few years, WhatsApp implemented new features like end-to-end encryption, which made decryption of intercepted messages over the air practically impossible. WhatsApp developers also released the WhatsApp web client (which can be used on all major web browsers on PCs and Macs) and the WhatsApp desktop application (for Windows OS and macOS). Since its release, over the years, WhatsApp has grown to introduce applications for all mobile operating systems (Android, BlackBerry OS, Windows Phone, and others). Artful ly11/21/2023 ![]() Appropriately, it’s called Nightshade and it “lets artists add invisible changes to the pixels in their art before they upload it online so that if it’s scraped into an AI training set, it can cause the resulting model to break in chaotic and unpredictable ways” – dogs become cats, cars become cows, and who knows what else? (Boris Johnson becoming piglet, with added grease perhaps?) It’s a new kind of magic. Which is why the most interesting news of the week was that a team of researchers at the University of Chicago have developed a tool to enable artists to fight back against permissionless appropriation of their work by corporations. It’s sometimes better, as in rugby, to “get your retaliation in first”. And lawsuits are almost always retrospective, after the damage has been done. Now, legal redress is all very well, but it’s usually beyond the resources of working artists. The inescapable implication is that there may be serious liabilities for generative AIs coming down the line. And in case anyone thinks that infringement suits by angry artists are like midge bites to corporations, it’s worth noting that Getty, a very large picture library, is suing Stability AI for alleged unlicensed copying of millions of its photos and using them to train its AI, Stable Diffusion, to generate more accurate depictions based on user prompts. Just to put that in context, if an AI company was aware that its training data included unlicensed works, or that its algorithms generated unauthorised derivative works not covered by “fair use”, then it could be liable for damages of up to $150,000 for each instance of knowing use. ![]() In one, some graphic artists launched a suit against three companies for allegedly using their original works to train their AIs in their styles, thereby enabling users to generate works that may be insufficiently transformative from the original protected works – and in the process generating unauthorised derivative works. They’re doing this because ultimately these questions are going to be decided by courts. Of course the bosses of AI companies know this, and even as I write their lawyers will be preparing briefs about whether appropriation-by-scraping is legitimate under the “fair use” doctrines of copyright law in different jurisdictions, and so on. The inescapable implication is that there may be serious liabilities for generative AIs coming down the line Which means that underpinning the magic that these generative AIs so artfully perform may be intellectual property (IP) theft on a significant scale. ![]() Nor did it offer to compensate you for so doing. ![]() And no tech company asked you for permission to “scrape” them into the maw of its machine. What this implies is that if you are a graphic artist whose work has been published online, there is a good chance that Midjourney and co have those works in its capacious memory somewhere. When fed with a text prompt, the AIs then assemble a set of composite images that might resemble what the user asked for. The secret lies mainly in the fact that they are trained by ingesting the LAION-5B dataset – a collection of links to upwards of 6bn tagged images compiled by scraping the web indiscriminately, and which is thought to include a significant number of pointers to copyrighted artworks. So let us examine how Midjourney and its peers do their tricks. But if the spectator somehow manages to discover how the trick was done, then the magic disappears. Many people think it’s magical, which in a sense it is, at least as the magician Robert Neale portrayed it: a unique art form in which the magician creates elaborate mysteries during a performance, leaving the spectator baffled about how it was done. Welcome to a good way to waste most of a working day. For example: “An image of cat looking at it and ‘on top of the world’, in the style of cyberpunk futurism, bright red background, light cyan, edgy street art, bold, colourful portraits, use of screen tones, dark proportions, modular” and it will happily oblige with endless facility. It’s engagingly simple to use: type in a text prompt describing a kind of image you’d like it to generate, and up comes a set of images that you couldn’t ever have produced yourself. Those whom the gods wish to destroy they first give access to Midjourney, a text-to-graphics “generative AI” that is all the rage. Turn off echo dot light11/21/2023 Our tests found that Alexa’s ultrasonic sensor isn’t quite as fast as other infrared motion sensors we’ve tested, including the Philips Hue sensor. This can be especially helpful when going into dark basements or garages where the light switch may be out of the way, such as a cord hanging from a bulb in the middle of the room. If you have smart bulbs, or lights connected by a smart plug or switch integrated with Alexa, you can easily set up a Routine that turns the lights on when someone enters and stays in the room. What you can do with Echo motion sensing Automatically turn on lights All of these functions can be turned on or off in the Alexa app. In addition to ultrasonic motion detection, select Echos can be instructed to monitor for specific sounds, including the beeping of smoke or carbon monoxide detectors, barking dogs, breaking glass, snoring, or a baby crying. Also, it doesn’t create any light like some infrared sensors do, and it doesn’t detect through drywall, so it won’t accidentally react to sounds or motions from an adjacent room. One nice benefit of Echo’s ultrasonic ability is that it continues to work even while the same device is streaming audio, so you don’t need to pause your music. Separate infrared motion sensors such as these can be set up to do the same thing, but if you have a compatible Echo, you may not need the additional sensors. You can also adjust the sensor’s sensitivity and range in the Alexa app. Using Alexa Routines (Alexa-speak for a simple command program), also found in the Alexa app, you can trigger actions when the speaker detects the presence of someone in the room. Your speaker then uses its built-in microphone to monitor changes in how the waves bounce back to it, which happens when the waves encounter something moving, like you. When enabled in the Alexa app settings, the Echo continuously emits sound waves that are imperceptible to humans. ![]() Although some third-party Alexa-enabled speakers may include features such as better audio, weatherproof ratings, or rechargeable batteries, only Amazon Echo speakers include this additional capability.Įcho speakers use ultrasonic sound waves to detect motion, similarly to how a bat uses sonar to find insects. Ultrasonic sensing isn’t available on older Echos or any Echo Show display (they have camera-based motion sensing), nor is it on the new Echo Pop. ![]() If you have a 4th-gen Echo or Echo Dot or a 5th-gen Echo Dot, you’re all set.
